History
Heard County Middle School is an average size school with a population of approximately 525 students. Opened in 2002, Heard County Middle School is located two miles northwest of downtown Franklin. An accredited middle school, Heard County Middle School is a great place to learn. Parents, community leaders, students and teachers are all involved in making HCMS the best. The only middle School in Heard County, HCMS is a community school that demonstrates pride in every activity on campus. Students are recognized for academic, athletic, and club-related accomplishments.

Heard County is located near the Georgia-Alabama state line in the west central section of Georgia. The population of Heard County is 10,200. The county seat of Franklin is located at the intersection of three major thoroughfares: US 27, GA 34, and GA 100. It is almost centrally located between Carrolton, Newnan, LaGrange, Hogansville, and Roanoke, Alabama. There is scenic beauty throughout the county, including the Chattahoochee River in Franklin and hillside views atop Blackjack Mountain near Ephesus, numerous streams, panoramic views from hilltops and vast granite outcroppings.

Heard County Middle School offers several academic and mentoring programs. Heard County Middle School has many extracurricular activities, that includes football, softball, basketball, wrestling, track and field, cheerleading, and marching band. Students are also invited to participate in activities and clubs.

Heard County Middle School is one of only a few schools in Georgia that has an extensive ropes course on campus. The rope course gives students and adults the opportunity to learn to function as part of a team, and to develop physical strength, stamina, dexterity, and confidence in themselves and their fellow teammates as they choose to accept the challenge offered.

Our Middle School students use automated circulation system in the media center, read for comprehension with the Accelerated Reader program, research projects with recommended book selections, Encarta Encyclopedia on CD-ROM and utilize the Galileo database. Several other modern technologies are available for student checkout.

Heard Middle School was named as a Breakthrough Middle School for the state of Georgia in 2010.
